The Meeks recently opened DoodyCalls in Smyrna, becoming part of the first full-service pet waste removal franchise.
The couple first became interested in the business when they read an article about DoodyCalls in USA Today.
“We had been looking (for a business opportunity) for five or six years and read about this in USA Today last fall,” Bill Meeks said.
The Meeks found their calling through the start of this unique — yet — necessary business.
DoodyCalls fits into the Meeks’ lifestyle, as they love the outdoors and animals. They saw the need for a pet waste removal service in the area and were inspired by the growing and profitable business of DoodyCalls.
Equipped with rakes, shovels and bags, DoodyCalls’ professional scoopers let pet owners wash their hands of the whole clean-up business.
For homeowners can choose from weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and one-time cleanings for about $16 per visit for an average-sized yard. Rates are based on the number of dogs, size of area to clean, frequency of service and
amount of pet waste.
No contracts are required.
DoodyCalls can also clean, disinfect and deodorize decks, patios, dog runs and kennels, provide brown spot treatment to eliminate damaged areas of a homeowners’ lawn caused by pet waste, and can even exchange dirty
litter boxes from cat owners homes on a weekly basis.
The Meeks say they enjoy being able to work from home and running a business that helps clean up the environment. They feel that they are contributing to the safety and health of numerous Middle Tennessee
communities.
“People don’t realize the harmfulness of pet waste in our environments,” Bill Meek said.
Despite popular belief, pet waste is not fertilizer and if not properly disposed can remain in the soil for up to 10 years, he said.
“In fact, pet waste is one of the most common carriers of diseases like heartworm, ringworm and Parvo,” he said. “It can also cause intestinal and kidney problems in humans, with kids being most susceptible since they
spend so much time in the yard.”
In addition to residential services, the Meeks offer a variety of neighborhood pet waste removal options. Homeowners associations, apartment complexes, parks and municipalities don’t usually own pets – but often they do
own the problem of pet waste. The company cleans and disinfects common areas such as playgrounds, pool areas, paths or any place dogs ‘do their thing’ to help keep communities sanitary and safe.
DoodyCalls also provides pet waste stations offering communities a cost-effective solution to managing pet waste on their property and works with property managers to develop pet waste management plans, according to
the Meeks.
The Meeks said America’s love for pets is undeniable as there are more than 65 million dogs in the U.S. and nearly 63 percent of households own at least one dog.
They also see this as an opportunity to further contribute to the community by working with local animal welfare societies. The Meeks sponsored a dog wash fundraiser recently at Kelton’s on Old Fort Parkway in
Murfreesboro to benefit Rutherford County PAWS.
When the Meeks aren’t out ‘scooping,’ Bill works in the information technology field and Lisa is a physical education teacher at Stewarts Creek Elementary School.
